introducing Brick & Brush Zellige: Crafted in the heart of Morocco

Moroccan Zellige tile in it’s raw format

At the heart of Zellige production lies Fez, Morocco, an ancient royal city where traditional artisan crafts thrive. It's in this historic city that the Zellige Collection is meticulously handcrafted, one piece at a time, just as it has been for centuries. Yes, it's true—each tile is genuinely handmade, a labor of love that connects the past with the present.

In the ancient city of Fez, Morocco, where time-honored traditions intertwine with modern innovation, a timeless artistry emerges. Handmade in Fes, Brick & Brush Zellige embodies the rich heritage of Moroccan tilemaking that has endured for centuries. With a touch of contemporary technology to enhance the customer experience, we ensure that the essence and allure of this remarkable ceramic legacy remain untouched.

MOROCCAN ZELLIGE MOSAIC

Known for its unique and intricate geometric patterns and vibrant, colorful designs.

Zellige, a cherished Moroccan tradition, is painstakingly crafted by skilled artisans. From the meticulous shaping and pressing of clay to the intricate glazing and precise cutting that forms field tiles or intricate patterns, every step is a testament to the artistry that has been passed down through generations.

In Morocco, Zellige isn't just a tile; it's an integral part of everyday life. Its intricate patterns adorn public and private spaces, weaving the tapestry of Moroccan culture.

In the United States, Brick & Brush Zellige has captured the hearts of those who appreciate its handmade charm, its vibrant color variations, and its unique, uneven surface that dances with light. Its versatility allows it to seamlessly fit into various interior styles, from Mediterranean Modern to Boho, Modern Farmhouse to Contemporary.

With hand-made zellige tile, you should anticipate charming imperfections like unevenness, color variations, and minor chips. These distinctive irregularities result in each tile being one-of-a-kind and exceptionally beautiful.

The Making of The ZelLIGE Collection

The journey begins with locally sourced clay from the outskirts of Fez. Dried clay is patiently soaked in water for days and then hand-blended into a paste. This rustic process retains minerals like iron and lime, adding a distinctive texture and character to the tile's surface. Even leftover clay-cutting scraps find new life, recycled into the next day's batch.

As the freshly cut tiles bask in the sun, they gradually dry to the perfect "leather" hardness. Stacked in kilns following tradition, these terracotta tiles exhibit a beautiful range of colors, from buff to pink. Hand-applied glaze comes next, adding that sought-after variation in color and movement that defines authentic Zellige.

Our commitment to sustainability is evident in our use of natural gas-fired kilns, reducing air pollution compared to traditional wood and olive pit-burning beehive kilns. After the glaze firing, meticulous quality checks against color control boards ensure consistency before packing for shipment. And why wooden boxes? To preserve the integrity of the tiles, artisans chisel each piece, a centuries-old practice that gives Zellige its distinctive sharp edges.

Brick & Brush Zellige, where tradition meets innovation, creates timeless beauty for your spaces.
